Initial Setup

A picture of my enameled pot being used to heat strike water.
Here I'm heating up water for preheating the tun and for mashing

My great cheap little turkey fryer came with the enameled pot and I only use it for heating water, nothing else. I will bring a few gallons to a near boil and pour it into my mash tun to warm it up so I don't lose heat when I mash in later.

Hot water warms up my mash tun
I simply add a few gallons of hot water to my tun to warm it up

This really helps prevent heat loss, especially since I'm using a larger cooler with smaller amounts of grain (usually less than 20lbs) for 5 gallon batches. At first I lost a lot of heat warming the cooler, but now I don't lose more than a couple of degrees over the entire mash, which can be over an hour.
